Since our last post, lot of development has taken place in our Gaushala. We have added two more sheds; the number of cows has also increased to more than 150. Two rooms, one office and one doctors room, have also been constructed. Four additional staff members have been engaged taking the total number of regular staff to eight. Two part time veterinary doctors visit the gaushala regularly for treatment of injured and sick cows. All this has been made possible because of generous contributions in form of cash and material by our donors. Another activity started recently by us is the preparation of vermi-compost from cow-dung. We are also planning to install a plant for distillation of cow urine. Sri Radhey Shyam Gaushala (shelter for cows) is situated in Kalka (Haryana, India) on the Panchkula-Shimla National Highway.

We have more than eighty cows at present. The gaushala started functioning around the year 2003 mainly by the effort of two enterprising animal lovers of Kalka, who, moved by the miserable plight of homeless cows roaming around in the streets of Kalka and nearby areas, decided to do their bit for their betterment. Many of these cows used to be sick, because of eating garbage, esp. polythene, dumped in the open by the residents; others were injured, having been run over by reckless drivers or beaten by some cruel person.

Land for this project was provided by the Panchayat of village Tagra Hakimpur.

In addition to giving fodder & shelter to these cows, we have made arrangement for their treatment. Two veterinary doctors have been engaged for this purpose.

All this is being done with the help of donations provided by donors. Sh. Chander Mohan, the local MLA and Dy. CM of Haryana, who inaugurated the gaushala donated Rs. 3 lacs for the construction of sheds. We are also being provided every help by the local administration in this endeavour.

We future plans include setting up of a mobile dispensary for the treatment of animals and erecting more sheds for shelter of cows. We also wish to purchase additional land for growing fodder for cows.
